Reflecting on my wedding and all the dreams I had for it, Picnik Society has come to embody the spirit of what I wanted and created for that day.
Back in my early 20s, I had this grand vision of a unique wedding ceremony. Picture this: barefoot friends in head wraps, marching down the aisle to the beat of drums, everybody dressed in white surrounded by branches. I wasn't exactly good at chasing trends or following the rules. I was set on making it different and not just for the sake of defying tradition. It was about creating an experience that was my own version of romantic bliss. I can remember telling a friend all about my dream wedding. She promptly asked, "But what about what your future husband wants?" Ah, the naivety of youth! LOL I was so convinced he'd just hop on the crazy train and embrace my vision without a second thought. And you couldn't tell me otherwise.
So, yep, back then people called me a rebel, eclectic, eccentric... but all I ever wanted was an experience true to my heart. I wasn’t into big weddings or flowers —just something that felt like me. Fast forward 20 years, and I can say that my actual wedding was comforting to my creative, introverted soul and totally non-conforming (although not quite like the original dream because hubby didn't exactly "drink the koolaid", as they say). I had no flowers, no bridal party, a few close friends and family, and minimal decor that I DIY'd single handedly. We celebrated in a really small venue and I went on a rampage with cotton bolls and candles to pretty things up. I wore my mother's gown from the 70's, but had it altered a bit. After the ceremony everyone enjoyed snacks, a food truck serving up burgers, and dancing to some old-school jams played by my DJ friend. It was a whole vibe, an indoor picnic type situation and so unapologetically unconventional.
Now, years later, I'm still embracing non-conformity and carrying it into my business. At the moment, I don't offer custom looks or a variety of themes (this may be something I incorporate later). Right now this brand is focused on providing experiences for folks who want to encounter something different, those who appreciate beauty that feels a little off-beat. But rest assured, for Chapter 2 of Picnik Society (the reprise), the essence of every experience will be something that promotes genuine connection and celebrates LOVE - much like my sweet little wedding. 🖤 And so it begins…
